The first Student-Wives meeting of the year is always special, as incoming seminarians’ wives gather with the wives of returning students to get acquainted, share refreshments, and, most importantly, meet the faculty and hear plans for the upcoming year.  This academic year got off to a promising start as over 30 student wives and faculty members attended the annual “Meet & Greet” Reception on the evening of Thursday, September 6, 2007.

Opening with prayer at 7PM in the Seminary refectory, the meeting commenced with the introduction of faculty members by Father Michael Dahulich, Dean of the Seminary.  Each faculty member spoke briefly about the courses they teach and offered insights about Seminary life.  The wives introduced themselves and shared a bit about their families.  Wives and faculty were able to chat casually as they helped themselves to the delicious appetizers and desserts provided by many of the wives.  It was extremely helpful for the wives to be able to meet and interact with the faculty members, who play such a pivotal role in shaping the lives and ministries of the seminarians during their years at St. Tikhon’s.

This reception was followed by an orientation meeting for the wives.  Father Michael imparted some of the wisdom that he has gleaned during his years as Dean in order to assist the wives in their formation.  He addressed such themes as the sacrificial life, adjusting to your husband’s seminary schedule, the need for “networking” among the wives, and building up our own spiritual lives during this valuable time at St. Tikhon’s.  Matushka Tamara Cowan, who coordinates the wives’ activities and is the wife of a priest who recently graduated from St. Tikhon’s, shared reflections on her time as a seminary wife.  Her moving thoughts, coupled with Fr. Michael’s insights, gave all the wives many things to consider, helping us to realize that the seminary time is one of growth and formation not only for the seminarians, but for their wives as well.

The last item on the agenda was the schedule of events for the 2007-2008 academic year.  As in previous years, the wives will host many inspiring speakers.  They also have the opportunity to attend Seminary classes, the Fall Lecture Series, and the Wives’ Evening Education Series.  This very successful series, now in its second year, will include classes on spirituality presented by Father Michael Dahulich and Dr. Mary Ford.  Fellowship events, such as Prosphora Baking, the St. Michael’s Day Children’s Talent Show, the St. Nicholas Day Gathering, and wives’ socials are also planned.

Based on the first Wives’ Meeting of this academic year, it seems that the wives will have many opportunities to forge friendships, learn, and grow during the time that their husbands are in seminary.  We thank God for providing us with such wonderful leadership at the Seminary that makes such exciting possibilities a reality!
