Seminarian John Carpenter

John Carpenter is a third-year seminarian at St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Theological Seminary. He grew up in the Orthodox Church but says he never imagined he would attend seminary. Originally from the Orthodox Church of the Holy Cross in Medford, New Jersey, he attended Penn State University on a piano scholarship. It was there that he discovered a love for opera and singing. After graduation, he followed that passion by joining the Bavarian State Opera's young artist program, which launched a decade-long career as a full-time professional opera singer in Germany.

Looking back on those years overseas, John says living in a largely secular environment was deeply formative. As a Christian there, he learned the importance of simply being a friend, a colleague, and a steady presence. He came to understand that relationships take time, a lot of time, and that Christian witness begins not with arguments or debates of facts, but with listening and patience.

Discussing his path to seminary, John says he later began to sense a calling to return to the United States. That sense of calling, he explains, did not come through his own certainty, but through the encouragement of trusted friends and family. He firmly believes that God works through the people placed in our lives, and so he followed their advice and returned to the United States. Knowing that he wanted to serve others in a meaningful way, he began teaching at a charter high school in Camden, New Jersey. There, he once again saw the power of simply showing up consistently and encouraging people who carried heavy burdens.

After a year of teaching, the same voices that had encouraged him to return home suggested that he consider attending seminary. John says he applied, trusting that God speaks through others once again. Around that same time, he had just begun dating his now wife, Brenna. He remembers telling her, "I'm thinking of doing something kind of crazy—now's the time to abandon ship!" Instead, she encouraged him. They dated long-distance during his first year at seminary, became engaged during his second, and were married before his third. In keeping with what he describes as their rapid pace of major life events, they have now welcomed their first child, Lucy.

Asked about his experience at St. Tikhon's, John says he chose the Seminary largely because of its people. His father, Fr. Luke Carpenter, has served on the Board for many years, and through him John witnessed the deep commitment of the faculty and administration to forming servants of the Church. He was also deeply impacted by meeting Archbishop Michael, whose generosity with his time and sincere pastoral care made it clear that St. Tikhon's is not an institution of rules and regulations, but a community centered upon personal relationship and love. As graduation approaches, John and Brenna are eager to serve God and His people wherever they are called.
